Tim Allen Fails To Have State of Illinois Shut Down the Winfield Register

February 25, 2012

Winfield 411

by Jed Skillman

On the morning of February 22nd, the State Board of Elections heard arguments relating to such weighty matters as a major labor union seriously under reporting donations; a Chicago Alderman accused of not filing campaign reports and a dispute between pro life/pro abortion groups…then they got to the matter of “Allen v. Zegel,” a frivolously filed time-waster.

Besides threatening what amounts to a boycott of businesses that advertise in The Winfield Register, Winfield Trustee Tim Allen also filed a complaint with the State Board of Elections in an attempt to get the State of Illinois to shut down The Register or attach fines or regulatory costs that would make publication prohibitively expensive. Trustee Allen claimed that the newspaper is really a platform for Mr. Zegel’s political views and is therefore subject to election law. Trustee Allen did not refer to his own “political” blog, Winfield 411.

Called before the Election Board, the matter took all of five minutes. Mr. Zegel answered a few questions. The Election Board declared The Register to be a newspaper, and Trustee Allen’s case was dismissed.
